A Day of Transplants

I could not be happier with my decision to purchase a greenhouse for my garden this year. I knew that it would make a difference but it has far exceeded my expectations. Today I am out and about enjoying the beautiful spring weather here in Iowa and working around the yard. My vegetable plants are coming along very nicely; so nicely as a matter of fact that I had to start transplanting already. I have a boatload of of Fordhook zucchini and Goldtender Summer Squash that is in need of transplant and so I worked on that.

If you haven't taken the step to purchase even a small greenhouse, cold box, or hoop house I would like to encourage you to do so; it makes a significant difference and you will see results giving you plants faster and food to the table sooner.

Here are my plants that I just planted on March 25th. Wow! Results=Impressive!

Small Space Gardening: Raised Beds

We started our spring off with a bang here in Iowa this year! With a little inspiration, a set mind, and a goal to grow better, nutritious foods this year. After getting our greenhouse up and going it was now start to jump in on the fun part, building our raised beds. I must admit that I have never made a raised bed before but it is actually really simple. With the right resources just about anyone can build a raised bed. I have to give credit to give credit for this project to Sunset and their Edible Small Space Gardening piece on building raised beds. They gave a complete list of supplies and step-by-step instructions on how to complete the job. After going for supplies, around $75 and a few hours later we have our first raised bed built and installed. Thanks to all the people that have amazing resources to make it possible for newbies such as myself to build and start growing more food in such small spacing.

If you are interested in building a bed like our please visit Sunset online or pick up a copy of their magazine Edible Space Gardening at your local store.
